Community is Key!

Thursday, April 12, 2018 by Warren Backer | Learning Guitar

One of the greatest lessons I learned when I studied with Minneapolis jazz guitarist Paul Renz was the value of community. Paul took great pains to establish a community of jazz players in the Minneapolis area. People play together in ensembles, they get to know each other, and in many cases they establish life-long friendships.

There are so many benefits in playing with other musicians. These benefits are both social and musical. I have really taken that lesson I learned from Paul to heart. At BGS, I will actively look to structure opportunities for students to play together.I am planning two performance opportunities each year. Whenever possible we will have students perform together at those venues.

At this point, community is an intention, but once I get to know my students, I’ll start building!

By the way, you can check out Paul’s website here. And get to one of his performances if you can; he’s an awesome guitarist! That’s all for now!

Starting up BGS - First Post!

Thursday, March 29, 2018 by Warren Backer | Learning Guitar

Hi everyone!

I'm really excited to write this first blog post for Backer Guitar Studios (BGS)!  And I'm really looking forward to starting up BGS in the New Ulm Area. I grew up in a family that has a rich music and educational environment and I want to bring that feeling to the BGS community.

You can expect that I'll post to my blog at least monthly, more if I have something valuable to say.  I will definitely post BGS-related news and communicate BGS events here.  But I will also post thoughts, insights, opinions, and valuable information on music in general and guitar playing.

What better way to start however, than to talk about the reasons for learning to play guitar! I certainly could provide reasons, but there is already a website that has done an awesome job describing why guitar is a great instrument to learn.  Check out why you or your child should learn guitar by clicking here!

kidsguitarworld.com is definitely a website you should become familiar with.  That's all for now.

Best to you and your family!  - Warren
